Rise Resist Repeat

Feeling Conflicted

I'm totally behind "retiring" the trappings of the Civil War -- I've long been for it, because these people were traitors and they LOST. Besides, they've been rallying points for racists and other psychos for decades.

But the attack on legitimate presidents bothers me. Sure, some owned slaves. Distasteful, shameful, no one should condone it. But you can't erase the past, and still be honest. And they were presidents. Not traitors.

I'm not Andrew Jackson's biggest fan, even though my direct line grandfather "Fightin' Billy" Tipton was one of the president's closest friends. I am also 1/8th Cherokee. But he was a man of his times, and he didn't take up arms against the United States.
